Game 27 - at Quesnel Millionaires

Game Preview ...

Needless to say that this game has taken on a whole new complextion given the result just four nights ago and that these two will meet again in four more nights in the Coliseum. The Spruce Kings head back down to Quesnel to play the Millionaires for the second time in less than a week and the sixth time since the beginning of the season. This is also the fourth trip to Gold Pan city and a rink that was given the Spruce Kings fits having lost two of the previous three in the Vault.

On Friday night, confidence was high with the Spruce Kings riding a two game winning streak and the belief that the team had turned a corner in their season. That thought was quickly extinquished with the clang of the goal post, not once but twice as the Millionaires came at their visitors hard all night long. Just a matter of seconds into the opening period, Trevor Hertz rattled the post and the rebound came right back out for Tyler French who also hit the post. The Millionaires kept persisting and scored twice in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead to the dressing room after the first period.

The Quesnel Millionaires contined their relentless forececk and eventually built up a 4-0 lead over the Spruce Kings. With time becoming a factor, the Spruce Kings were able to pounce on a few chances including a big point shot by Josh Pineiro that came right back on Kirby Halcrow (Quesnel Millionaires goaltender) where Lyndon Martell was able to find the loose puck to bury his third goal in nine games with his new team. Brooks Robinson scored the only other marker for Prince George giving the twenty year old forward his ninth of the season and 38th point to keep him in the top sixth among BCHL point getters.

The Spruce Kings will be looking for secondary offensive production and a strong defensive showing from top to bottom. With the smaller ice surface in Quesnel, the Millionaires like to dump and then press for a turnover. That style of play has proven effective with the Mill's 'D' getting rewarded with lots of assists and the occassional goal from point shots in the smaller offensive zones. One player that had a good game on Friday night but was still victimized by the final outcome was Spruce Kings goaltender Kyle Nielsen.

Nielsen faced a total of thirty shots and was strong between the pipes coming up with some big stops throughout. Tonight Steve Papciak, who has only played against the Millionaires once, will be back between the pipes tonight. Papciak and the Spruce Kings picked up a win against the Millionaires back on October 30th in Quesnel. That game saw the Spruce Kings build up a 3-0 lead on four shots to chase the starting goaltender eleven minutes in. On that night both Kirby Halcrow and Wes McLeod were away in Summerside PEI for the World Junior A Challenge. Tonight Halcrow is expected to get the start again for Quesnel and has proven to be a challenge for Prince George to beat in his three games with 2 wins and 1 loss as well as a 1.58 GAA and 93.67 save percentage.

Tonight's game is a 7:00pm start from the Vault in Quesnel with the game broadcast live on 93.1 CFIS-FM and also online from the Spruce Kings website. Prince George will be back at home for two more games this week starting with the Trail Smoke Eaters on Thursday and the Quesnel Millionaires on Saturday. Both games will be at the Prince George Coliseum with 7:00pm starts.

Game 25 - at Quesnel Millionaires

Game Preview ...

These two teams are proving to be more closely matched than either team would like to admit. Heading into this contest the Spruce Kings and the Millionaires are separated by a single point in the Interior Conference with the advantage going to Prince George and both having played 24 games. This is the fifth meeting between the two teams having split the previous four games with a pair of wins each. The teams will meet a total of ten times through the season with the winner of the season series winning this year's CNC Challenge Cup.

In the last two meetings it was the visitors that took home the victories in each other's rinks ... a trend the Spruce Kings would like to see continue, at least for tonight. The Spruce Kings are currently riding a two game winning streak having beat the Williams Lake Timberwolves twice in a row and both times by 6-3 margins. Prior to the games versus the Timberwolves, the Spruce Kings turned a corner in their season in a game against the league leading Vernon Vipers. It was a game that the Spruce Kings lost but ultimately came away with many morale victories in.

It was the game prior to Vernon that the Spruce Kings wish they could call a mulligan on after coming up with a poor performance against the Millionaires on home ice. That loss will still be fresh in the minds of all the players as they head into the Vault tonight. In that game the Millionaires introduced the BCHL to Catlin Bigsnake, at 6'5" 275, the younger brother of Bigsnake is an imposing presence on the ice and intended only to be an enforcer for Quesnel. Jonathan Gibson ended up in a dust up with Bigsnake and it is safe to say that Gibson still remembers the big man dusting off his hands after their no-decision tilt. But speaking with Gibson, the rookie only wants to see him and his team put the damage on the score clock and more specifically in the win column.

It is expected that Kirby Halcrow will get the start tonight after bringing home silver from the World Junior A Challenge as the backup goaltender to Sean Bonar for Team Canada West. As for Wes McLeod he is feeling much better today and after putting up a four point night in Williams Lake on Tuesday, that is definitly a good thing for Prince George. Kyle Nielsen is expected to get the start for the Spruce Kings with Steve Papciak still nursing a "skate bite" injury on his ankly. Papciak meanwhile will be adding some colour to tonight's broadcast as he joins myself for the play-by-play of the game beginning at 7:15pm with the pregame show and opening faceoff at 7:30pm. The game can be heard on 93.1 CFIS-FM and also online from the Spruce Kings website by clicking on the CFIS-FM Listen Live link.

Game 24 - at Williams Lake Timberwolves

Game Preview ...

The Spruce Kings take on the Timberwolves for the fourth of five times in Williams Lake during the regular season. Prince George will be looking to leave a lasting impression on their Interior Division rivals as they won't play each other again until February 3rd. The Spruce Kings are coming off a come-from-behind victory over Williams Lake on Saturday night after a 6-3 win on home ice. The next day the Timberwolves had to limp back into their own barn to host the league leading Vernon Vipers and were shutout 6-0. That loss turned into the straw that cost the T'Wolves coach his job.

After suffering three losses, that started on Friday night, the Timberwolves ownership group made the decision to terminate Dave Dupas and give the head coaching duties to Jason Wright. The move has been viewed as a surprising one by some who believed that the Timberwolves were showing signs of coming on and proving the nay-sayers wrong about not being able to compete at the Junior 'A' level. Timberwolves general manager Geoff Murdoch claims that the team wasn't staying the course and that was what led to the changing of the bench bosses.

Meanwhile the Spruce Kings averted disaster themselves with that Saturday night win over the Timberwolves. The Spruce Kings had been failing to put away their opposition when they had late game leads and had come up with a less than stellar performance in a 4-1 loss to the Quesnel Millionaires. That all seemed to change on Friday night when the Spruce Kings put in a solid effort for a full sixty minutes and were able to capitalize on the few mistakes that the Vernon Vipers made. The league's best team still left with two points, but the Spruce Kings were left with a belief that they could have won that game had their been just a little bit of puck luck on their side.

That puck luck manifested itself on Saturday at the expense of the Timberwolves when the Spruce Kings pressed on a delayed penalty call and were able to get a shot through to the net that counted. Everybody in the building, except the referee, thought that the Timberwolves touched the puck at least twice before Bourke ultimately buried the game winning goal. That shot became a turn of fortunes and injected a shot of much needed confidence into the entire team.

The Spruce Kings will get two more boosts on the backend tonight as Wes McLeod and Josh Pineiro will both be back in the lineup. McLeod, who had missed a total of five games, is back from his all star performance at the World Junior A Challenge with a silver medal. Pineiro, who missed out the last four games with an undisclosed upper body injury, will also be back in the lineup and once again paired up with McLeod on the blue line. Unfortunately I don't expect to see either on the ice as much as they had previously. The intense travel and game schedule of the WJAC has caught up with Wes and he isn't feeling well. As for Josh, he has been practicing for the past two days but has been taking it easy and will be watching to make sure he doesn't reaggrivate his injury.

Perhaps the recent confidence boosters will help to keep the momentum moving upwards for the Spruce Kings with players like Brad Bourke and Joe Morgan getting the job done. Other players coming off great weekends include RJay Berra, Nick DeSousa, Zac Rasmussen, Jonathan Gibson and Jeff Earnest as well as the usuals like top line of Lyndon Martell, Brooks Robinson and Sam Muchalla. By the way, Kyle Nielsen will get the start tonight and affiliate player Bowman Rutledge will be the backup tonight with Steve Papciak nursing a minor injury. Papciak made the trip with the team and will be in the stands watching the game.

Game time tonight is 7:30 from the Cariboo Community Complex and can be heard live on 93.1 CFIS-FM as well as online from the Spruce Kings website by clicking on the CFIS-FM Listen Live link. The Spruce Kings will also be on the road Friday night in Quesnel to take on the Millionaires before returning home to host the Salmon Arm SIlverbacks in a matinee affair at the Prince George Coliseum Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.

More Than a Medal and Some Souvenirs

After missing five regular season games with the Spruce Kings while away representing Canada West at the World Junior 'A' Challenge, Wes McLeod has come back with a new attitude and a new approach to the game. I had a chance to sit down with Wes on Monday night just a few hours after he touched down back in Prince George. We looked through some of his souvenirs and talked a little bit about his experience in Summerside and then started looking ahead to rest of the BCHL season.

When I first arrived at his place, Wes was preparing for Tuesday and a game day with the Spruce Kings by getting his gear sorted. A long time friend growing up and playing hockey together, Zac Rasmussen also stopped by for a visit. The two looked through some souvenirs that came home including the official Hockey Canada magazine and tournament program. There were also some pictures of Wes taken at the event. But of course the big items were his Team Canada jersey, silver medal and WJAC All Star Defenceman plague.

One thing I have noticed about Wes McLeod this season is that he plays with a lot more edge, that edge may have gotten even rougher after this most recent trip out east. Which was his second trip to Summerside after going there last season to play in the CJAHL Prospect's Game. To say that Wes had a good tournament would be an understatement as the nineteen year old defenceman was selected to be an assistant captain and played as the first line pairing on the blue line with fellow BCHL'er - Mat Bodie.

Wes McLeod was a major contributor for his team finishing 11th in tournament scoring with five assists, including a record tying four assists in one game. With more than his fair share of playing minutes every game and his edgy physical play in an international tournament, penalties become the risk but Wes was able to get the job done and was only handed one minor penalty. The infraction was called late in the third period of the first game against the Russian team during the round robin portion of the tournament.

Some twenty four hours after the final whistle to end the tournament, Canada West picked up their second silver medal after suffering a 2-1 regulation time loss to the Americans. It was the second year in a row that the Americans prevented Canada West from claiming the championship. Although gold was only a shot away, the team comprised of Junior 'A' players from the five leagues in Western Canada is still the only team to have played in all four gold medal games.

Playing in that gold medal game is an experience that Wes McLeod won't soon forget as he ranks that one at the very top of his list of accomplishments to date in his hockey career. Something tells me that this won't be the last time we see or hear from Wes McLeod playing at an elite level in the game that is so much a part of our social and cultural fibre.

As I mentioned I had a chance to sit down with Wes and was able to congratulate him on his contributions at the World Junior 'A' Hockey Challenge.

Game 23 - vs Williams Lake Timberwolves

Game Preview ...

Last night's game for the Spruce Kings will go down on paper as a loss at the hands of the Vernon Vipers, but in so many other ways it was a win for the players. Many fans were quick to acknowledge the hard work of the team from start to finish in the game. There were comments about the lack of puck luck and had that been different it could very well have been a game that the Spruce Kings should have won.

In Friday night's game the Spruce Kings opened the scoring after a rare defensive miscue by one of the rookie defenders on the Vipers roster. Joe Morgan intercepted a fanned clearing attempt and went in on Graeme Gordon with a shot that handcuffed the league's best netminder leaving a juicy rebound for RJay Berra to pick up and bury for his sixth of the season. The Vipers followed that goal up with some relentless offensive play but were stymied by Spruce Kings netminder, Kyle Nielsen. The first ended with the Spruce Kings up 1-0.

The second period proved to be the turning point in the game although Prince George did fight back - especially in the second half of the third period. In the middle frame it would be a boy from McBride that would step up for the Vipers in front of 22 of his family and friends that made the trip in for the game. Dylan Walchuk pulled the Vipers even with a highlight reel goal picking up the puck from the back wall and walking around a pair of Spruce Kings to sneak a backhander to the far side past Nielsen. Walchuck would add a pair more to finish the night with a hat trick including a powerplay marker and an empty netter.

Unfortunately for the Spruce Kings and the BCHL, video review is not a part of the game but recording the games to DVD are. After the game, while reviewing the game tape, it appears that Vernon may have been given an unearned goal. A nice shot from aforementioned Walchuck rang off the goal post and settled on the ice in the blue paint under Nielsen. The red light went on and the referee signaled goal, but when Nielsen got up the puck was over a foot in front of the goal line.

There are two things that come immediately to mind from that last paragraph including the cliche that you have to be good to be lucky and lucky to be good. There is no denying that the Vernon Vipers are good. Also you can't cry over spilled milk and perhaps that is a lesson that Korey Martens was trying to teach the Spruce Kings too as shortly after that he assessed a game misconduct to the coach.

With the game 4-1 in favour of the visitors and only one coach on the bench for the home team, Jonathan Gibson was the recipient of a complete good effort shift from the Spruce Kings that started inside their own zone. Clayton McEwan and Justin Fillion completed a 'D' to 'D' breakout and were able to spring Zac Rasmussen, Jeff Earnest and Gibson into the offensive zone. It was Rasmussen that made sure the puck was put on net and Gibson did the rest lifting a saucer short side on Gordon to cut the Viper's lead in half.

After that the Spruce Kings manufactured no less than six scoring chances including a shot that sailed over a wide open net, one off a goal post and a breathtaking three-way passing play that hit the base of the post and was kept out by the skate blade of Gordon. The Vipers managed only nine shots on goal in the final frame and were outshot in a period for the first time this season. The ninth shot by Vernon came from the stick of Dylan Walchuk who had an easy time finding the middle of the empty net.

Here's to the Spruce Kings carrying all of those positives, and many more, in to tonight's game versus the Williams Lake Timberwolves one of only two teams that they have a better than .500 record against. The Spruce Kings have a three wins a tie and a loss in five games with their Interior Division rivals and will be looking to move back into fifth spot in the Conference. Game time is 7:00pm with the game broadcast live on 93.1 CFIS-FM and also online from the Spruce Kings website and the radio station's website ... www.cfisfm.com

Game 22 - vs Vernon Vipers

Game Preview ...

The Spruce Kings are still looking for a catalyst for change ... well tonight's opponent doesn't come much bigger. The Vernon Vipers bring an unbelievable 18 and 1 record with them into the Coliseum and that goes along with the title of defending National Champions. The Vipers made one previous stop in the Castle back on October 18th and left with a 5-1 victory.

The score was not indicative of the game as the Spruce Kings, for the most part, skated and shot on par with the Vipers. A few miscues proved to be costly and ultimately led to the loss. The Spruce Kings believe that they can once again skate and shoot with the league's best team and steal a few points on home ice.

Earlier today both teams had reason to celebrate as Wes McLeod of the Spruce Kings and the Jones twins - Connor and Kellen - of the Vernon Vipers helped Canada West advance to the gold medal game at the World Junior A Challenge. In their semi final game against Canada East all three proved to be big contributors in a 9-1 victory. Wes picked up four assists including one on the eventual game winning goal. Meanwhile Kellen Jones had a goal and an assist and his twin brother earned player of the game honours with a five point night (2 goals and 3 assists).

Team Canada West will now face the Americans in a rematch of last year's gold medal game and the only year that Canada West has had to settle for less than gold. The game will be broadcast live across the country on TSN2 at 1:00pm local time. It will also be rebroadcast on TSN later in the evening.

Gold medals and games on the other side of the country aside, the Spruce Kings will have to be sharp for sixty minutes tonight against the Vernon Vipers. Game time is 7:00pm with the game broadcast live on 93.1 CFIS-FM and online from the Spruce Kings website - just click on the CFIS-FM Listen Live link. Pay-per-view broadcast of the game is also available from the BCHL website.

Game 21 - vs Quesnel Millionaires

Game Preview ...

If the regular season was broken down into three periods, the Spruce Kings have made it out of the first period trailing on the score clock but very much in the game heading into the second period. Twenty games into the regular season and the Spruce Kings find themselves with 16 points with a record of 7-11-1-1 good for fifth place in the Interior Division. It is safe to say that nobody in the dressing room is happy being four games below .500 one third of the way into the regular season.

On the bright side, the Spruce Kings have been achieving success in many areas and are perhaps looking for a catalyst to change their current status. With one of the best penalty kill units in the BCHL among road teams, the Spruce Kings have been putting that stat to good use on home ice and improving their overall numbers as well. After having a stretch of three games where the powerplay was not clicking, the Spruce Kings finished the month of October with substantially better numbers on the man advantage situation.

Players have also been making their mark and have been receiving accolades for their contributions. Wes McLeod was selected to play for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge, Jeff Earnest was offered a four year scholarship to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and Brooks Robinson was given BCHL Player of the Week honours for his play this past weekend.

Robinson has been quietly contributing to the Spruce Kings since game one and has been consistently in the top rankings among point getters in the league. This past weekend after scoring twice against the Quesnel Millionaires and setting up a total of four others in two games, Robinson moved into the top five with 31 points (8 goals, 23 assists) and has been averaging over 1.6 points a game.

A recent acquisition to the Spruce Kings has been proving to be a young stud at the Junior A level after leading the BC Major Midget league in scoring. Lyndon Martell has been seen flying on the ice at the Coliseum and has been averaging a point a game since joining the Spruce Kings ... oh and did I mention that he is just sixteen years old. Martell will be with his hometown team only for one season where the Kamloops Blazers, who own his major junior rights, hope he will become a more seasoned forward and able to make an immediate impact as a seventeen year old next year in Blazer town.

The game tonight is the fourth meeting between these two familiar foes, but there will be a few new names on the other side of the ice. Just today the Millionaires added 6' 5" 275 lbs forward Catlin Bigsnake. The Mills also added a big time scorer earlier in the week after completing a deal with the Burnaby Express that saw Jon Puskar traded to Quesnel in exchange for James Bettauer. However Puskar is not expected in the lineup at the Coliseum tonight ... Bigsnake is!

Game time is 7:00pm at the Prince George Coliseum with the game broadcast on 93.1 CFIS-FM and also online from the Spruce Kings website. To access the streaming audio, just click on the CFIS-FM Listen Live link on the left hand side of the Spruce Kings main page. Pay-per-view broadcast of the game is also available from the BCHL website.

Player of the Week

Congratulations to Spruce Kings forward, Brooks Robinson for picking up "Player of the Week" honours in the British Columbia Hockey League after a six point outing in two games. Brooks started the weekend off in Quesnel with a pair of helpers in the first period and then, when it started looking like the Millionaires might be getting themselves back into the game, Robinson ended up netting the game winner and insurance marker in the third period. He followed that up with a pair of assists in Saturday's game versus the Trail Smoke Eaters.

Talk about a quiet and unassuming guy, Brooks may actually be the incarnation of the true humble hard working hockey player of days gone by. Never worried about what his contributions will do for himself, Brooks always puts the team first and would prefer to stay in the shadows while other players get the glory. Seeing himself as a play maker, this twenty year old player thrives on those around him and this past weekend it was Jeff Earnest and Jonathan Gibson that received the praise of Brooks.

From the beginning of the season I have been watching him work his magic in the faceoff circle and play the role of setup man; that is where the majority of his points come from. Brooks has a total of 31 points with three quarters of those being assists ... the same trend earned him the Player of the Week nod as he scored twice and setup four others. I had a chance to sit down with Brooks and congratulate him ...
